This month, we are happy to feature the Department of Social Services - Economic Assistance. Their ongoing commitment supports the well-being of South Dakotans, ensuring that individuals and families have dependable access to essential programs that promote stability and long-term success.
Guided by the mission “Strong Families – South Dakota’s Foundation and Our Future,” the team helps connect community members with vital services such as food assistance, medical coverage, childcare, utilities support, financial help, and employment-related resources. By offering both DSS programs and connections to other community services, they empower individuals to identify their strengths and build a healthier future.
Economic Assistance has been serving the state since the 1960s, demonstrating decades of continuous support for families across South Dakota. Their work is often steady and behind the scenes, yet deeply impactful for the individuals they serve.
They also highlighted the value of community partnerships through Codington Connects, sharing:
“Codington Connects is a group of agencies that work together to help individuals in need. Teamwork is so important to us all.”
Reflecting on the most meaningful part of their work, they shared “It is rewarding to be able to lead such a great team of Benefit Specialists.” Their Benefit Specialists determine eligibility for SNAP, Medical, and TANF programs, listen to each person’s unique situation, and make referrals to community resources when additional support is needed. This collaborative approach ensures individuals receive the care and guidance they need and deserve.
