In March we are excited to highlight the Watertown Healthy Youth (WHY) Coalition, a vital program under the Human Service Agency, as our Agency of the Month. This dedicated coalition has been making a significant impact on our community by working to educate and protect the well-being of our youth.
The WHY Coalition is committed to educating the community about risk-taking behaviors and the choices that impact youth health and safety. Their mission is to raise awareness of developmental needs and collaborate with community resources to create a safe and healthy environment. By mobilizing the community, they strive to prevent and reduce substance use among youth, empowering them to make informed decisions that pave the way for a brighter future.
Founded in 1997 as a result of the Watertown School District’s strategic planning sessions in 1995-96, the WHY Coalition has remained steadfast in its efforts to support and protect young people. Over the years, their influence has grown through partnerships and programs aimed at fostering a healthier community.
Prevention is often the best-kept secret. While the WHY Coalition’s efforts may not always be in the spotlight, their impact is undeniable. Through collaboration with various programs and resources, they provide essential services that benefit families and youth. One notable example is the printed Family Resource Directories, which help connect the community to vital support systems.
The WHY Coalition recognizes the importance of Codington Connects as a hub of caring professionals and organizations working to enhance the well-being of our community. The vast resources available through Codington Connects serve as a bridge, linking individuals to valuable information and services. They encourage everyone to explore the website and take advantage of the support available.
The WHY Coalition takes great pride in their advocacy for programs, policies, and practices aimed at reducing substance use among youth. Their initiatives, such as the Safe Rides and Get Home Safely campaigns, play a crucial role in promoting safety. The Sweet Deceptions display serves as an educational tool for adults, shedding light on products accessible to youth. Additionally, their support of Project SUCCESS at Watertown Middle and High School ensures that students receive the guidance they need to make positive choices.
Through dedication, education, and collaboration, the Watertown Healthy Youth Coalition continues to be an important resource within our community. This month, Codington Connects celebrates their efforts and encourages community members to learn more about their valuable work.
