This month, we’re proud to recognize Deputy Sheriff Travis Gutzmer of the Codington County Sheriff’s Office as our Individual of the Month. Serving as a School Resource Officer (SRO), Travis plays an important role in creating safe and supportive school environments for students across Codington County.
“The SRO position gives me the opportunity to advocate for students every day and be a positive presence in their lives. I’m able to help them navigate challenges, hold them accountable when needed, and connect them with the support and resources they need to succeed - both in and out of school,” Travis shared.
When asked what skill he brings to Codington Connects, Travis emphasized the power of collaboration. “Partnerships. I’ve spent my career forging mutual relationships and simply having that connection & knowing someone to call for the assist when needed has been crucial in my success.”
His sense of integrity and purpose shines through his inspiration: “My uniform has two important designations. My badge says who hired me, and my nameplate says who raised me. I must represent both with honor & integrity.”
Outside of his work, Travis enjoys a unique hobby - “I collect and restore classic arcade games and pinball machines. My arcade is currently sitting at around 30 machines.” He also shared that his dream is to one day “own a bowling alley! With an arcade of course.”
A few fun facts about Travis: he can’t live without “Pickles!” and if he could choose any superpower, it would be “Healing. I wish I had a magic wand that could fix someone’s disease, pain, or struggles.”
Thank you Travis, for the dedication, compassion, and connection you bring to your work each day - both within our schools and throughout the community!
