Navigating motherhood can be overwhelming, especially when you're doing it without a strong support system. That’s why the Watertown Regional Library has created Mama’s Matter, a weekly support group designed to offer mothers a welcoming and confidential space to share, connect, and grow together.
Mama's Matter meets every Friday at 10:30 AM at the library, and is open to all moms—whether you’re a first-time parent, new to the area, or just looking to build connections with others who understand the joys and challenges of raising children.
The idea for Mama’s Matter was inspired by a session at the Public Library Association conference in Columbus, Ohio, last April. After attending a talk from a librarian who successfully launched a mother’s support group at her library, the idea felt like a natural fit for Watertown.
“I wasn’t aware of anything like this in our community, and I felt it could really benefit local moms—especially those who are new in town or don’t have much of a support network,” said the organizer, Laura Hinman. “As a mother myself, I remember wishing something like this had existed when I had my first child.”
Since its launch, the group has quickly become a source of encouragement and connection for moms in Watertown. Several attendees have expressed how grateful they are to have found a space where they can feel understood and supported.
Each meeting offers a relaxed environment where moms can ask questions, share advice, talk about their week, and simply vent if they need to. These open conversations often lead to meaningful connections and helpful insights—whether you're navigating sleep schedules, teething troubles, or just need to hear “you’re doing great.”
To enrich the experience, monthly or bi-monthly speakers are invited to share knowledge on a variety of parenting-related topics. The group recently welcomed Sara Foust with Codington Connects, and this Friday, the Watertown EMS Chief will be presenting on infant and child first aid and CPR—an important and empowering topic for any parent.
If you’re looking for a community of moms who “get it,” Mama’s Matter is here for you. No registration is required—just drop in, bring your little one if you’d like, and join the conversation.
