How Everyday Moments Build Developmental Assets and Why Parents Are Superheroes
At Codington Connects, we often talk about the power of small moments between caregivers and children. That idea is strongly supported by the Search Institute’s Developmental Assets Framework, which highlights the key experiences, relationships, and supports that help children grow into confident, resilient, and thriving young people.
One of the most important findings from the framework is simple: ordinary, everyday interactions matter more than big, elaborate efforts. Children build critical developmental assets — things like positive identity, a sense of belonging, decision-making skills, and emotional resilience — through consistent connection with caring adults.
That’s exactly what inspired our Parents Are Superheroes campaign. We’re celebrating the powerful, everyday ways caregivers help children grow:
• reading one more story
• listening without judgment
• cheering them on
• encouraging independence
• making time for simple moments together
These small actions help build many of the assets the Search Institute describes, including support, empowerment, positive family communication, boundaries and expectations, and constructive use of time.
Every time a caregiver leans in, slows down, listens, or encourages — they are reinforcing a child’s self-worth, building trust, and helping them develop strong internal strengths they’ll use for the rest of their lives.
Parents don’t need capes, superpowers, or perfect routines. They just need moments.
Because those moments build the assets that help children thrive.
